With the ever evolving technology in smartphones the other things attached to it also get evolved with time be it ear buds, wireless charging, camera evolution, OLED display or fast charging. Every smartphone manufacturer developed its own fast charging system or say the smart charging system. That not only charges the phone faster but also optimizes the temperatures so as to avoid overheating and other issues. One such technology developed by OPPO is VOOC flash charge. The super fast charging technology developed by the company is superior to other manufacturer’s charging systems at present. Want to know how? Read on..
What is vooc charging?
VOOC (Voltage
Open Loop Multi-step Constant-Current Charging)
is the fast charging technology by the smartphone brand OPPO. Each brand has its
own fast charging system and the module is almost similar. But OPPO took fast
charging very seriously and implemented a secure and a different approach to
charge the device up to maximum in a short period of time. Even if you charge
it while in use or watching a video or playing a game.
What actually is fast charging?
When the smartphone battery gets exhausted we recharge
it. So for that we use charger and the charger supplies energy to the battery
to make it 100%. This energy is measured in watts. So here is the technology
that is applied - more watts creates more power and this power quickly charges
the battery. High watts, high power.
What is the concept and technology behind VOOC?
Power is measured in watts and is calculated by
Watts = Volts x Ampere
You must have seen 5V- 2A or 7V- 2A printed on your
smartphone charger. This depicts the watts it is supplying to your device to
charge.
Calculate it with the above formula;
Watts = 5V x 2A = 10W
or
5V x 0.5A = 2.5W
or
7V x 2A = 14W and so on.
This is generally applied by all the fast chargers by
all manufacturers. That is higher Voltage and lower currents.
So what makes VOOC different from others is that it
uses a different approach. Instead of higher Voltage it uses higher current to
charge. So it goes like this 5V- 4A = 20W, whereas others use 9V - 2A = 18W to
charge.
Stages of charging
There are two cycles or stages in which a charger charges
a battery. The first stage where it charges the battery so fast from 0 to 80 %
or anything like 35 to 90% etc in 40-45 minutes. So when a manufacturer says
that this phone can be charged to 85% in 30 minutes - they are talking about
the first stage of charging. The first cycle.
Then there is another stage that is the second stage
where the charging gets slower. It takes as much time to charge the remaining
10-20% in 30-40 minutes as a normal charger does in normal charging. That could
be said the flip side of fast charging. Second stage is slower but if you are
in a hurry the first cycle makes it best for you the whole day you can use your
phone for the next 8-10 hours or maybe more.
What is the purpose of increasing the current instead of voltage in VOOC fast charging?
Read this to know -
Temperatures and heating issues
Heat is the byproduct of charging. The more the voltage
the more the heat produced. A 9V charger produces heat that leads up to 8-10
degrees Celsius. So the benefit of VOOC charging is that it keeps the
temperatures normal or regular and certainly not up to 8-10 degrees. That's the
benefit of using higher current instead of high Voltage in charging. That's
vooc charging
Another Perk -
Stream Videos/games or just simply watch a movie while
charging.
Yes that's true, While charging the heat is produced
but if the device is being used while charging the amount of heat gets doubled
and this time from CPU and GPU. The heat produced from two sources makes it
very dangerous, so the device charges at the normal rate to avoid overheating.
But it's not the case in VOOC charging, it just charges at a practical rate,
just above the normal rate and still giving the fast charging, the first stage
of charging.
Other brands fast charging systems and their names.
There are other fast charging systems named – Huawei
SuperCharge, Motorola TurboPower,
Mediatek PumpExpress, Qualcomm Quick Charge. Take a look at the below picture
to get the idea of fast charging speeds of each of the aforesaid charging
systems.

Generations of VOOC charging
First it was only VOOC Flash Charge -
that gave 60% charge in 30 minutes.
Then VOOC 2.0 = 5V- 4A.
Then VOOC 3.0 = 5V- 5A.
The next generation is called SuperVOOC
- it gives 40% charge in 10 minutes. This is 10V and 5A.
Now how does it do that?
VOOC Flash Charge is like 5V- 4A = 20Watts. So 60%
charge in half an hour.
Super VOOC is 10V- 5A = 50Watts. That means your
smartphone can be fully charged in 30 to 40 minutes.
Brands Using VOOC Charging
OPPO’s VOOC charging is licensed to other brands also.
Named OnePlus, Vivo, Realme etc. VOOC 2.0 licensed to OnePlus with the name
Dash Charge and SuperVooc with the name Warp charge (5V-6A=30W).
According to Wikipedia – “VOOC
has been licensed to 14 other corporations, most of which are in the phone
charger and power strip businesses. OPPO claims that more than
1000 patents around VOOC has been filed worldwide”.
